New Delhi: zingbus, an intercity travel brand, is reinforcing its commitment to responsible road travel through ‘No Need for Speed’ (#SafeAt80), with speed locked at 80 km/h across all its services. The initiative highlights the combination of technology, trained drivers, and vehicle safety measures behind each journey.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ Road Accidents in India 2024 report attributes 70.28% of road accident deaths to overspeeding, while WHO links a 1% rise in average speed to a 4% increase in fatal-crash risk. Applying the fourth-power speed-risk model described in European Commission guidance, reducing average traffic speeds from 100 to 80 km/h could correspond to approximately 59% fewer fatal crashes under comparable conditions.

Speed is only the starting point

zingbus’s safety approach includes AI-based Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) for fatigue monitoring. This technology can analyse facial cues, including eye movements and head position, to identify signs of drowsiness or distraction and trigger real-time audible alerts, prompting the driver to refocus and take corrective action. It adds a layer of vigilance alongside driver safety training, operational oversight and live GPS tracking.
Facial monitoring focuses on changes in alertness, such as prolonged eye closure or unusual head movement. These cues help systems flag potential fatigue so that drivers can respond before the situation becomes more serious.
The monitoring is intended to support drivers throughout long and overnight journeys, helping flag changes in alertness while there is time to respond. Training and human oversight remain central to acting on those alerts. Trained marshals provide passengers with an onboard point of assistance, while CCTV, fire detection and suppression systems, fire-retardant interiors, extinguishers and emergency exits support vehicle safety. Regular checks and maintenance complement these measures.

Efficient journeys through better planning

Prashant Kumar, Co-founder and CEO of zingbus, said: “We are still able to match journey durations with speed locked at 80 km/h because we eliminate unnecessary stoppages and plan our services better. On services equipped with washrooms and food served onboard, passengers can take care of those needs within the coach, reducing additional roadside halts. We save time by organising the journey better while retaining planned driver rest breaks. That is the thinking behind ‘No Need for Speed’.”
Through #SafeAt80, zingbus is highlighting how speed discipline, attentive driving and operational planning work together to support safe and efficient intercity journeys.
