As India’s commercial vehicle industry continues to evolve, professional vehicle cleaning is emerging as an important part of fleet management, operational efficiency and vehicle maintenance. The growing shift from conventional manual washing to mechanised and automated cleaning solutions is creating new opportunities for technology providers such as Kärcher. With increasing emphasis on faster turnaround times, consistent cleaning standards, water conservation and preventive maintenance, fleet operators, bus companies and logistics players are increasingly recognising the value of professional cleaning systems.
In an exclusive interaction with Bus Coach India, Mr Markus Limberger, Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Member of the Board of Management at Kärcher, shares his perspective on India’s growing importance in the company’s global strategy, the changing landscape of the country’s vehicle-washing industry and emerging opportunities in the commercial vehicle segment.

Q1. Kärcher has a strong global presence in professional cleaning solutions. How important is the Indian market in your global growth strategy?

India plays a crucial role in Kärcher’s long-term growth and operational orientation. We are moving beyond viewing the country primarily as a sales market and are continuously strengthening our manufacturing, engineering, and local supply-chain capabilities India combines significant domestic demand with an increasingly capable manufacturing and supplier ecosystem, which makes it strategically important to our global operations. The primary focus is building local capacity to serve Indian customers effectively, while establishing a strong foundation that can support broader regional requirements over time.

Q2. What are the biggest changes you have observed in India’s vehicle-washing industry, especially in the commercial-vehicle segment, over the past few years?

The biggest shift is the move from largely manual washing towards more organised, mechanised and automated processes. Commercial fleet operators now look much more closely at turnaround time, cleaning consistency, vehicle appearance, water use and the impact of washing on vehicle bodywork. This is driving greater interest in high-pressure systems, automated gantry washes, chassis-cleaning equipment and water-recovery technologies. The change is particularly important for buses and trucks because these vehicles operate intensively and are exposed to heavier road contamination. Cleaning is therefore becoming less of a manual support activity and more of a managed operational process linked directly to vehicle availability and fleet efficiency.

Q3. How are you seeing increasing demand from fleet operators, bus companies, logistics companies and commercial-vehicle workshops for Kärcher products?

The demand is being driven largely by operational efficiency. For a fleet operator, every vehicle sitting in a wash bay is temporarily unavailable for productive use, so faster and more predictable cleaning has a direct business value. There is also greater focus on fleet appearance and brand presentation, particularly for passenger transport and organised logistics operators. Preventive cleaning of the chassis and underbody is another consideration because accumulated dirt, grease and road contamination can affect maintenance. At the same time, water-use requirements are becoming stricter. Together, these factors are encouraging customers to look beyond basic manual washing towards professional cleaning systems that provide repeatable results and better resource control.

Q4. Commercial vehicles such as buses, trucks and coaches have very different washing requirements compared with passenger cars. How is Kärcher addressing these specific needs?

Commercial vehicles require a different approach because of their size, operating environment and contamination levels. Kärcher addresses these needs through solutions such as automated multi-brush gantry systems for large vehicle bodies, heavy-duty underbody wash lances and high-flow cold- and hot-water high-pressure cleaners from the HD and HDS ranges. These solutions are designed to remove road grime, mud, grease and oil commonly found on buses and trucks while supporting efficient cleaning of large vehicle frames and difficult-to-reach areas. The objective is not simply to use a larger version of a passenger-car wash. It is to design the cleaning process around fleet throughput, vehicle dimensions and the operating conditions of commercial transport.

Q5. What opportunities do you see in India’s growing bus and coach industry for professional vehicle-wash systems?

We see considerable opportunity as public transport, organised intercity mobility and electric-bus fleets expand. State transport undertakings, private coach operators and electric-bus depots manage large numbers of vehicles that have to be cleaned regularly and returned to service quickly. At that scale, manual washing can become inconsistent and difficult to manage. Professional automated systems can provide standardised cleaning cycles, predictable throughput and better control over water and labour. The opportunity therefore extends beyond simply supplying equipment; it includes designing complete wash solutions around the depot’s fleet size, wash frequency, available space, water management and maintenance requirements.

Q6. What are the biggest challenges involved in washing large buses and commercial vehicles efficiently?

The first challenge is physical scale. Buses and trucks have large surface areas and difficult-to-reach sections, which makes consistent manual cleaning difficult. The second challenge is the type of contamination, as road grime, mud, grease and oil often require more intensive cleaning. Water consumption also becomes significant at high-volume depots washing many vehicles every day. Finally, vehicle throughput is critical. During peak periods, operators cannot allow the wash bay to become a bottleneck that delays fleet availability. An effective system therefore has to balance cleaning performance, speed, water management and reliability rather than focusing on one parameter such as pressure alone.

Q7. How important are artificial intelligence and intelligent automation in the future development of cleaning equipment?

Automation, AI and smart technology play a key role in making cleaning processes more consistent and efficient. Sensor-based systems help optimize wash cycles, while connected technologies support proactive maintenance and minimize equipment downtime. The main value for fleet operators is practical: achieving reliable cleaning quality, faster turnaround times, and higher operational uptime.

Q8. Water consumption is a major concern in India’s automotive and transport sectors. How is Kärcher helping customers reduce water consumption during vehicle washing?

Water conservation is a key priority for Kärcher. We address this by combining efficient cleaning technology with effective water-treatment and recycling systems that allow wash water to be reused. At the same time, our high-pressure nozzle technology optimizes cleaning impact, ensuring thorough results without relying on unnecessarily high water volumes. For busy commercial depots washing large fleets daily, this approach enables significant cumulative resource savings while maintaining high operational efficiency.

Q9. What is your vision for a more sustainable commercial vehicle-washing ecosystem in India?
Our vision is to support wash facilities that operate with high resource efficiency and minimal environmental impact. By combining water recycling, energy-efficient equipment, and responsible detergent use, we help fleet operators reduce resource consumption while maintaining fast vehicle turnaround and dependable performance.

Q10. Kärcher provides cleaning solutions for dealerships, workshops and service stations. Which of these segments currently offers the strongest growth opportunity in India?

At present, commercial fleet depots, public-transport workshops and multi-brand automotive and commercial-vehicle service centres are showing particularly strong potential. These environments have frequent cleaning requirements, high equipment utilisation and a direct business cost associated with vehicle downtime. Public-transport depots are also becoming more organised as fleet sizes increase, while multi-brand service centres require flexible cleaning systems capable of supporting different vehicle types. Dealerships and service stations remain important, but fleet and workshop environments present a particularly strong case for mechanisation because productivity improvements can be realised repeatedly across a large number of vehicles.

Q11. Are you looking at expanding your dealer and service network to reach more customers in India’s Tier-II and Tier-III cities?

Yes. As industrial activity and professional cleaning demand expand beyond the major metros, our dealer and service infrastructure needs to grow alongside it. Kärcher is expanding regional branch coverage, local dealer networks and mobile-service capabilities across Tier-II and Tier-III industrial centres. However, the objective is not simply to add more sales locations. Professional customers also need confidence that spare parts, technical expertise and service support will remain accessible throughout the equipment lifecycle. We are therefore strengthening regional service capabilities to support timely technician deployment and service-response commitments within defined timelines, where applicable. Stronger regional coverage must combine commercial reach with dependable after-sales support, ensuring that customers in emerging industrial markets can operate their equipment with minimal disruption.
