SWITCH Mobility begins delivery of electric buses to Delhi govt

New Delhi: Hinduja Group company SWITCH Mobility has started delivering its low-floor electric buses, EiV12, to the Delhi government as part of a major order for 950 vehicles. The first batch of the fleet was officially flagged off on Thursday by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The EiV12 buses, manufactured in India with global engineering inputs, are designed to strengthen Delhi’s public transport network while cutting down on vehicular emissions. “These low-floor electric city buses, engineered with advanced global technology and manufactured in India, will significantly enhance Delhi’s public transport ecosystem while contributing to cleaner air and improved quality of life for millions of commuters,” said R. G. Venkataraman, Chief Commercial Officer at SWITCH Mobility.

The order was secured through a tender issued by Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). The 12-metre-long buses are built for high-frequency urban commuting and can seat 39 passengers. Their ultra-low-floor design makes boarding easier for elderly passengers and those with mobility challenges. For safety and convenience, the vehicles come equipped with wheelchair ramps, CCTV cameras, panic buttons, and GPS tracking systems.

The EiV12 buses use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries, chosen for their stability and safety. To further improve safety standards, each bus features a Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS). A rear-mounted dual-gun charging system has been introduced to enable faster charging and efficient utilization of depots.

Each vehicle is integrated with Switch Mobility’s proprietary Switch iON telematics platform, which supports real-time monitoring, fleet optimization, and integration with transport management systems. This is expected to help the Delhi Transport Department manage operations more efficiently as the city scales up its electric bus fleet.

The Delhi government has set an ambitious target of creating the country’s largest fleet of electric buses. Officials expect that the addition of nearly 1,000 new zero-emission vehicles will play a crucial role in tackling air pollution, one of the capital’s most persistent challenges.

SWITCH Mobility, part of the Hinduja Group and drawing on Ashok Leyland’s engineering expertise, already operates more than 1,250 electric buses worldwide, which have together covered over 150 million kilometers. Its electric light commercial vehicle range, the IeV series, has also been expanding rapidly, with over 1,000 units currently on the road.

With the rollout of the EiV12 in Delhi, the company said the capital has taken a significant step toward building a cleaner and more sustainable public transport system. The deployment is seen as a milestone in India’s transition to electric mobility and a reflection of Delhi’s commitment to cutting carbon emissions while offering safer, more reliable urban transport.
