Mumbai: As India accelerates its transition to electric mobility, NueGo—India’s largest intercity electric bus service—has emerged as a frontrunner not just in fleet deployment, but also in preparing its workforce for the demands of the future. The premium electric bus brand operated by GreenCell Mobility has successfully trained over 3,000 Coach Captains (drivers) and 400 Coach Hosts (onboard staff) through its Electric Vehicle-Centric Driver Training Program, widely seen as a model for the sector.
Launched as a specialized initiative to bridge the skills gap in India’s evolving electric vehicle (EV) landscape, the training program is designed to address both the technical complexities of electric buses and the heightened expectations of passenger experience. Conducted across five key cities—Delhi, Indore, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai—the program marks a significant investment in human capital, ensuring that the shift to sustainable transport is matched by high standards of operational readiness and customer service.
The week-long onboarding program for new recruits combines multiple learning formats—classroom instruction, simulator-based training, and practical, real-route driving experience. The comprehensive curriculum consists of 11 specialized modules, eight of which focus on Defensive Driving Techniques (DDT), while the remaining three cover customer experience and vehicle familiarization.
Among the core competencies covered are regenerative braking, battery-efficient driving methods, and the protocols for using electric charging infrastructure. These technical areas are vital for optimizing vehicle performance and ensuring safety in high-voltage systems. Equally important are the modules dedicated to service excellence, which prepare Coach Hosts and Captains to handle passenger interactions professionally, prioritize comfort, and uphold the brand’s premium positioning.
Safety is a cornerstone of the training program. Each of NueGo’s 300-plus electric buses—operating across more than 100 cities—undergoes 25 safety inspections spanning mechanical and electrical systems before heading out on the road. The training echoes this meticulous approach, preparing drivers to meet the highest safety standards under real-world conditions. Refresher training is mandatory every three months and includes hands-on assessments such as blind spot awareness, parallel parking, and L-shaped reversing.
The program is delivered by in-house experts stationed at NueGo’s depots, who bring real-time operational knowledge to the classroom. This localized delivery model ensures consistency and contextual relevance, as training incorporates city-specific driving challenges and route layouts. NueGo’s approach not only ensures that drivers and onboard staff are technically equipped but also culturally aligned with the service’s emphasis on sustainability and professionalism.
GreenCell Mobility, NueGo’s parent company, was founded by Eversource Capital—recognized as India’s leading climate impact investor. The company is building what it terms an “Electric Mobility-as-a-Service” platform, aimed at transforming shared transportation by integrating electric fleets, supporting infrastructure, and digital solutions into a single ecosystem.
As electric vehicles become an increasingly common feature on Indian roads, NueGo’s emphasis on workforce development offers a blueprint for how mobility operators can align business growth with environmental and social responsibility. With amenities such as air conditioning, ergonomic seating, and digital lounges in select cities, the company is also reshaping customer expectations for intercity bus travel—making it cleaner, safer, and more reliable.
